he purpose of signalling in the context of rail transport is to transmit information relating to the safety of rail traffic to staff. In order to carry out this function, lines are equipped with lights which, depending on the route, are located in a tunnel or overhead environment.

The purpose of signalling in the context of rail transport is to transmit information relating to the safety of rail traffic to staff. In order to carry out this function, lines are equipped with lights which, depending on the route, are located in a tunnel or overhead environment. Every colour and appearance used has a very specific significance in communicating information to drivers.

Signals for metro lines Two major types of signals are used on Metro lines:
Distance signals, circular in shape, which ensure that the correct distance is maintained between trains (safety distance).
Manoeuvring signals, which are rectangular in shape and which act as protection when manoeuvring (near points, in storage yards etc.).
Signals are made up of light elements or of modules (red, green, yellow, white, violet, blue, etc.) located in a housing. In overhead locations these are equipped with a proximity switch and a visor.
